Investigations under way into scores of peat extraction sites as drones capture suspected illegal activities

The Environmental Protection Agency has revealed that it has initiated numerous investigations into suspected illegal peat extraction, indicating a significant rise in unauthorized activities across the country.

Files released by the EPA indicate that there has been extensive commercial peat extraction occurring in various counties, all of which are suspected to be unauthorized and contribute to environmental degradation.

Last year, €39 million worth of turf was exported, raising concerns that this substantial economic activity is linked to environmental violations, prompting the EPA to take action.
