Indo Politics: Maria Steen's false start and Aras candidates confirmed
"Conservative campaigner Maria Steen has said she was "humbled by the outpouring of support" for her campaign as she fell just two nominations short of making it onto the presidential ballot paper. Speaking to reporters outside Leinster House this week, Ms Steen said that though it would have been "the honour of a lifetime to serve as first citizen of Ireland, being a citizen is honour enough for me"."
"However, she said the hunger for an "alternative" candidate has not been satisfied. She said she has the privilege of returning home to her family. With Steen and other would-be nominee Garreth Sheridan now out for the count, it's off to the races we go."
Maria Steen, a conservative campaigner, fell two nominations short of securing a place on the presidential ballot and said she was 'humbled by the outpouring of support' for her campaign. She spoke to reporters outside Leinster House and said that while serving as first citizen of Ireland would've been 'the honour of a lifetime,' being a citizen is honour enough for her. She said the hunger for an 'alternative' candidate has not been satisfied and that she has the privilege of returning home to her family. With Steen and fellow hopeful Garreth Sheridan eliminated, the presidential contest proceeds toward polling day.
