India: Stampede kills at least 18 people at train station DW 02/16/2025
Briefly

A stampede at a New Delhi railway station claimed the lives of at least 18 people, predominantly women and children, as they surged to board trains for the Maha Kumbh Mela. The tragic incident occurred around 8 p.m. local time, resulting in serious injuries for over 10 people. Initial death reports cited 15 lives lost, with the hospital confirming causes like hypoxia or blunt injuries, pending autopsy results. The Indian government announced financial aid for victims' families and initiated an investigation into the incident, amidst accusations of mismanagement from opposition leaders.
"I can confirm 15 deaths at the hospital. They don't have any open injury. Most [likely died from] hypoxia or maybe some blunt injury but that would only be confirmed after an autopsy," Dr Ritu Saxena, deputy medical superintendent of Lok Nayak Hospital in New Delhi.
"I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede," Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X.
