Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has secured a deal to build six submarines for the Indian navy, with the contract worth about $5.2 billion. This collaboration, in partnership with India's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, follows Thyssenkrupp's successful bid that cleared the navy's field trials, outpacing competitors like Navantia. Despite this significant deal, India's reliance on Russian military imports remains high, accounting for 36% of its defense acquisitions from 2019 to 2023, raising questions about shifting alliances in India's defense landscape and future collaborations with European nations.
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia accounted for 36% of India's defense imports from 2019-2023, the most of any single country.
By acting in partnership, and with the support of the German and Indian governments MDL and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will be setting standards for a sustainable and safe maritime future.
However, SL Narasimhan, a retired member of the Indian defense forces, expects more collaboration between India and Europe on defense 'when the requirement, price expectations and availability match.'
