Sukhbir Singh Badal’s security has been intensified following the assassination attempt, with Punjab state police confirming the attacker is in custody and an investigation is ongoing.
The shooter, identified as Narain Singh, approached Badal at the Golden Temple and fired a shot that missed, hitting a marble pillar instead.
This incident underscores the historical violence associated with the Harmandir Sahib, notably the 1984 massacre of Sikhs that followed the temple's occupation by armed activists.
Badal, now 62, had previously been under scrutiny for his handling of state affairs during his tenure as deputy chief minister, which led to his act of contrition.
