Ignoring Trump threats, Europe hits Google with 2.95B euro fine for adtech monopoly
""Google must now come forward with a serious remedy to address its conflicts of interest, and if it fails to do so, we will not hesitate to impose strong remedies," said European Commission Executive Vice President Teresa Ribera. "Digital markets exist to serve people and must be grounded in trust and fairness. And when markets fail, public institutions must act to prevent dominant players from abusing their power.""
""Google will not accept the ruling as it currently stands-company leadership believes that the commission's decision is wrong, and they plan to appeal. "[The decision"
The European Commission imposed a €2.95 billion fine on Google for illegally preferencing its own ad display services, concluding that Google elevated Google Ad Exchange (AdX) and distorted the European advertising marketplace since at least 2014. The action followed a 2021 complaint from the European Publishers Council and found that preferencing enabled Google to charge higher fees and hinder fair competition. The Commission ordered Google to end the anti-competitive practices and submit a remedy plan within 60 days, with the threat of stronger remedies for noncompliance. Google plans to appeal the decision. The case contrasts with a recent US Department of Justice antitrust action that had fewer consequences for Google.
