Nathan Murphy, 33, was convicted after threatening a doctor he believed had assaulted his partner during a gynaecological examination. Following a hospital visit from his distressed partner on September 22, 2019, Murphy confronted the medical staff, claiming he intended to kill the doctor. Despite Murphy's claims of assault, his partner had no complaints regarding the procedure. The prosecution indicated that Murphy’s actions were unfounded and impulsively violent, compounded by his history of 32 prior convictions. His defense claimed he misinterpreted the situation, leading to his aggressive behavior.
"I was in the doctor's face, I was screaming, I said I was going to kill him, I didn't mean it," Murphy told Gardai.
John O'Sullivan, prosecuting barrister, told the court: "He (Murphy) bizarrely thought his partner had been sexually assaulted and there is not the slightest foundation to that."
Murphy had 32 previous convictions including for burglary, theft, criminal damage and road traffic offences.
Murphy's barrister, Eimear Carey, said he had "completely misinterpreted" the situation leading to his violent actions.
