Angela Cunningham, 63, was attacked in her Carrickmacross home on April 22, 2023, by her nephew Nyal Tumelty of Coolderry, Inniskeen, County Monaghan. The assault left her with life-altering brain injuries and she was discovered battered and bloodied 27 hours after the attack. She is now wheelchair-bound and receives round-the-clock care in a residential facility in County Meath. Tumelty was out on bail at the time for the assault and false imprisonment of another woman. Tumelty was sentenced to 12 years in prison, with the final two years suspended. Family report she had returned from a holiday bearing gifts and had planned family visits the weekend she was attacked.
