"Collaring the other still-living abuser, an elderly Spiritan priest, is his last hope at getting justice. "I want my day in a courtroom, but time is not on my side," he told the Irish Independent. "It's been four years since I went to gardaí and gave them a statement. Two of them [his abusers] were dead at the time, but two were still alive.""
Derek McCarthy was abused as a child by four men at a Spiritan school. Three of the alleged abusers are now dead, leaving one elderly Spiritan priest as the only surviving alleged perpetrator. McCarthy gave a statement to gardaí four years ago and wants a court hearing before time runs out. He says he needs his day in court but faces delays that thwart attempts to secure the remaining suspect. The deaths of the other abusers have curtailed avenues for justice and intensified McCarthy's urgency to see the surviving accused prosecuted.
