How to stop your MacBook from turning on when you open the lid
Briefly

Apple's auto power-on feature for MacBooks, introduced in 2016, activates upon opening the lid or connecting USB-C power. While this convenience is beneficial, it can be frustrating for those who may wish to open the lid without booting the device, such as when cleaning the screen or troubleshooting. Initially applicable to Intel processors, this feature now also applies to Apple Silicon M-series models. In a recent update in January 2025, an official method was introduced to disable this feature, allowing users to prevent their MacBooks from automatically powering on when the lid is opened. A Terminal command is necessary for this adjustment.
