The 2019 Hazards of Concern report by Berkeley stated that while tsunamis rarely enter the San Francisco Bay, they can cause significant damage, as evidenced by the 2011 event which led to $158,000 worth of damage.
Tsunamis can create complex environmental hazards, releasing pollutants into coastal marine environments; they damage roads through erosion and, in rare cases, may result in fatalities and injuries among those in hazardous zones.
