Historic German train factory to build tanks under new deal DW 02/05/2025
Briefly

The Alstom plant in Gorlitz, Germany, established for over 175 years, will shift from building train carriages to manufacturing military components after being acquired by KNDS, a Franco-German arms group. This transition is set to start in 2027, although the factory will fulfill existing carriage orders until then. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz praised the deal, stating that it preserves industrial jobs, ensuring the factory's significance will continue in a new sector: the defense industry, specifically providing parts for advanced military vehicles like the Leopard 2 tank.
Instead of train carriages, parts for the defense industry will be manufactured here from next year," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at the factory.
The factory in Gorlitz has manufactured rolling stock for more than 175 years, dating back to the time of the German Kaisers.
Scholz said it was "very good news that industrial jobs will be preserved even though Alstom is leaving Gorlitz."
From 2027, the factory will manufacture parts for Rheinmetall's Leopard 2 main battle tank, the Puma infantry fighting vehicle and the Boxer armored fighting vehicle.
