""I look at these photos and think 'I still can't believe I did that,'" says Mohammed Abu Daqqa, 31, the driver of the jet ski, as he scrolls through his phone at a refugee welcome center in Germany, where he now stays."
""In one single moment, the future I dreamed of was gone," Abu Daqqa says."
Three Palestinians from Gaza rode a jet ski from Libyan shores to the Italian island of Lampedusa, making a 186-mile crossing to reach Europe. The driver, Mohammed Abu Daqqa, posted videos and photos of the journey that became widely shared and now stays at a refugee welcome center in Germany. Abu Daqqa left behind his wife and two young sons in Gaza and aims to secure their safety. He had built a successful internet business and owned two homes before Oct. 7; the subsequent Israeli offensive destroyed his property and killed more than 250 extended family members, amid Gaza’s reported death toll exceeding 69,000.
