Ellen (26) was tearfully reunited with her family after arriving home from New York, where she has worked for the last number of years, to spend Christmas with her family in Nenagh, Co Tipperary. She said she was "overwhelmed" by the moment, landing from JFK to greet her mum Una, her brother John, her dad Eunan and their beloved dog Oreo. "You're going to laugh when you hear my surname," she told the Irish Independent as Oreo, who was patiently waiting to greet her, sparkled in his Santa suit as he jumped up on her lap. "It's Merry, like Merry Christmas."
In the arrivals lounge, Charlotte Fort (21) held a homemade sign for her older brother Karl (33), welcoming him home from Thailand for the first time in six years - but she came with the element of surprise. "He doesn't know we're here. He thinks he's getting the bus home to Farranfore," she said, admitting that her brother had already spent €40 on a ticket for the four-hour bus trip to Co Kerry as part of the ruse. "We haven't seen him in six years so we're super-excited."
His mother Gemma was waiting with Charlotte to greet her son, adding that she was delighted to see him home after the long time away and was looking forward to a Christmas surrounded by the whole family for the first time since 2018. Charlotte, who is studying in the Netherlands, arrived back to Ireland on Friday, but returned to the terminal to surprise her brother with a lift home to Tralee. "I hope we recognise him and he doesn't power-walk past us to the bus - I hope he's not too annoyed about buying the ticket," she laughed.
