Research from Imperial College London shows that flea and tick treatments for dogs are contaminating three ponds in Hampstead, posing risks to aquatic wildlife.
The pesticides imidacloprid and fipronil, banned in agriculture for their toxicity, are still used on pets. They wash off into local waterways during swims.
A study indicates that the concentration of imidacloprid and fipronil in dog-friendly ponds exceeded levels harmful to aquatic invertebrates by over twenty-fold.
Researchers identified that lawn and garden treatments are also contributing to the contamination of the ponds, raising broader concerns about pesticide runoff.
