Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced it would suspend operations in Haiti after police threatened their staff with death and rape, marking a critical escalation in violence.
"We are used to working in conditions of extreme insecurity in Haiti and elsewhere, but when even law enforcement becomes a direct threat, we have no choice but to suspend our projects," said MSF's Haiti mission chief Christophe Garnier.
MSF expressed that every day they cannot operate is a tragedy since they provide essential medical services in a city overrun by violence.
"However, we can no longer continue operating in an environment where our staff is at risk of being attacked, raped, or even killed!"
