Grafted is a low-budget New Zealand body horror film that examines modern beauty standards through the story of Wei, a Chinese student plagued by self-doubt due to her facial birthmark. Enticed by her father's experimental grafting research, she is drawn into a world of grotesque beauty manipulation after being selected by a predatory lecturer. As Wei navigates the superficial environment of her new life, the film critiques societal pressures and the immigrant experience. Though the film occasionally lacks deeper commentary, its mix of horror and edgy humor effectively engages viewers.
Grafted is more superficial than Coralie Fargeat's film in terms of what it says about appearance, but that is fitting and concealed by director Sasha Rainbow.
Wei's discovery of the crucial binding agent for skin grafts in the secretions of the corpse flower indicates the horrific direction the story moves towards.
