I've lived here for 50 years and in 50 years, I've never smelled how horrific it was here on Nevins Street," said Linda LaViolette, a member of the advocacy group Voice of Gowanus. She expressed the grievances of residents facing strong odors due to demolition work, emphasizing that these smells are unprecedented for long-term locals.
A lot of those odors are due to very unsafe construction practices that they've been doing," said LaViolette. She highlighted the environmental impact of coal tar being unearthed, releasing volatile organic compounds that potentially endanger public health.
The DEP says none of the tests confirm the soil is hazardous and they're using several methods to reduce odor, including a non-toxic neutralizing spray. While officials are taking measures, the residents continue expressing concerns regarding safety and neighborhood disruption.
We're still concerned about how that much truck traffic coming through the neighborhood is going to disrupt the neighborhood," said LaViolette. This statement sheds light on residents' worries about the implications of construction work on their daily lives beyond just odors.
