Google has announced it will revise map names, including the Gulf of Mexico and Denali, only when the U.S. government modifies its official geographic listings. This comes after President Trump's orders to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and revert Denali back to Mt. McKinley, a name used until the Obama administration changed it in 2015. The Associated Press stated it would still use the original name for the Gulf but refer to the mountain as McKinley, reflecting the complexities of geographical nomenclature in the U.S.
Google stated it will alter map names in line with U.S. government updates, only making changes once official listings for locations are modified.
Following Trump's directive, Google noted that any changes to the Gulf of Mexico or Denali will reflect in Google Maps once the government updates its database.
Denali is favored by Alaska Natives, while Trump's order reinstated the name Mt. McKinley, which had been changed by Obama in 2015.
The Associated Press will continue to use 'Gulf of Mexico' while acknowledging 'Gulf of America,' but will refer to the mountain as Mount McKinley.
