Google Maps officially changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to The Gulf of America on Monday, complying with an executive order signed by President Trump. The order highlighted the historical significance of the Gulf to America's trade and economy. This rebranding marks a notable shift in geographic labeling, following the proclamation of Feb. 9 as Gulf Of America Day. While Google has updated the name, Apple Maps has yet to follow suit, facing public scrutiny from representatives like Dan Crenshaw.
The area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.
The Gulf was a crucial artery for America's early trade and global commerce. It is the largest gulf in the world, spanning over 1,700 miles.
Google said at the time it would update the name of the gulf in compliance with that of the Geographic Names Information System.
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) complained on social media directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook because Apple had not updated its name of the gulf.
