In the dead of night, groups of excited beachgoers gathered along the Southern California coast to witness one of nature's most captivating - and elusive - marine phenomena.
Though it's rare to see bioluminescence on land, in the ocean, it's a common sight among squid, fish and jellyfish, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The phenomenon isn't just blue, either - colors can range from violet to yellow to crimson red, illuminating the ocean with mesmerizing hues.
The fascination with bioluminescence is nothing new - this strange chemical process has mystified some of history's most prominent figures for centuries.
