Germany slashes aid, development budget DW 09/21/2025
"My budget is down by around 910 million compared to the previous year. In view of increasing crises, Germany is investing far less in international cooperation than is actually urgently needed."
"In Kenya, over 700,000 refugees, many from Somalia, have been directly affected by the US cuts to the World Food Program."
"Tensions are growing, many people have to flee, the region is becoming increasingly destabilized,"
"This is unacceptable in human terms and is also not in Germany's security interests."
The governing coalition cut the BMZ budget by 8% to just under 10 billion (about $11.47 billion), reducing Development Minister Reen Alabali Radovan's budget by around 910 million versus the previous year. The reduction comes amid rising global crises and reduces Germany's investment in international cooperation. The minister rejected comparisons to US cuts but warned of humanitarian impacts, citing Kenya where over 700,000 refugees received only a third of needed food rations after US World Food Program cuts. German acute emergency aid fell sharply to 1.05 billion from 2.23 billion in 2024, alarming NGOs.
