Ahmed al-Sharaa, Syria's interim president, will visit Berlin for two days to focus on the return of Syrian refugees and ongoing violence. He will meet Chancellor Friedrich Merz and hold talks with business leaders, Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. Germany invited al-Sharaa after Bashar al-Assad's fall in late 2024 and hosts hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees. Al-Sharaa became transitional president in January 2025 and is working to rebuild ties with the West. Recent clashes in Aleppo and attacks on minorities have reportedly killed hundreds.
