Germany and the Gulf region: Energy and arms deals
"Only recently, Environment Minister Carsten Schneider of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) traveled to Saudi Arabia; shortly thereafter, Economy Minister Katherina Reiche of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) arrived and explained why: "When partnerships that one has relied on for decades begin to become a little fragile, we must look for new partners." The German government is elevating relations with Gulf states through frequent ministerial visits and high-level trips. Economy and environment ministers recently visited Saudi Arabia and signed agreements, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE within 72 hours to deepen economic ties and secure reliable deals. Germany is pursuing new strategic partnerships with India, the Gulf, and China because of uncertainty about dependence on the United States. Energy is central: the Gulf supplied oil for decades and gas has become crucial after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with LNG now part of supply diversification.
