"We will do more. Our neighbours and partners in Europe, including Denmark and the people of Greenland, can count on our solidarity."
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw threats over Greenland and described the retreat as the right way to go. Merz said any threat to acquire European territory by force would be unacceptable and warned that new US tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations, promising a united, measured and firm European response if tariffs are imposed. He noted US attention to the Russian threat in the Arctic and vowed that NATO allies will jointly protect Denmark, Greenland and the north from Russian threats. Merz urged repairing trust within NATO and affirmed European solidarity and increased burden-sharing.
