Carolina Wilga, a 26-year-old German backpacker, was rescued after being lost for 11 nights in the harsh Australian Outback. After losing control of her car and rolling down a slope, Wilga abandoned her vehicle and wandered barefoot for an extensive distance, ultimately surviving on rainwater and puddle water. She was last heard from by her family on June 29, and was found on July 11 by Tania Henley, who spotted her waving for help. Authorities described the discovery of Wilga as a miracle due to the rugged terrain.
"Some people might wonder why I even left my car, even though I had water, food, and clothing there. The answer is: I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope."
Wilga's family had last heard from her on June 29, and she was found 11 nights later on July 11 after surviving in the Outback.
Wilga walked barefoot across a huge distance in the remote reserve after abandoning her van many miles away from any established track.
Australian police emphasized that it was a 'miracle' someone spotted Wilga's vehicle in the rugged terrain where she was lost.
