Georgia authorities are investigating the collapse of a dock gangway on Sapelo Island that killed seven during a fall celebration for the Gullah-Geechee community, raising safety concerns.
Walter Rabon, Georgia DNR Commissioner, mentioned that the gangway, installed in 2021, suffered a catastrophic structural failure with minimal maintenance expected for aluminum, indicating potential negligence.
The tragic incident involved upwards of 40 individuals on the gangway; at least 20 plunged into the water when it collapsed, highlighting significant safety risks associated with such structures.
