Latin America Bioimaging (LABI), established in 2021, has rapidly progressed the bioimaging field in South and Central America, boasting 545 members across 31 nations. The Advanced Bioimaging Unit (UBA), founded in Uruguay in 2020 with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's backing, plays a vital role, offering state-of-the-art optical microscopy to roughly 140 researchers yearly. Despite having a modest scientific community, Uruguay has emerged as a regional leader in bioimaging. The UBA manager emphasizes the need for tailored training and collaboration, tackling challenges such as access to training, resource scarcity, and developing teaching materials.
Since its establishment, LABI and the Advanced Bioimaging Unit have advanced bioimaging education, despite challenges in training and resources, fostering collaboration across Latin America.
