"The increase has been observed for five consecutive years. Each year growth ranges between 10% and 17%. We can probably say there will be growth next year as well, as building permits have already been issued."
"People want to live near the city so they can come to work and enjoy the entertainment it offers, while also choosing nature, fresher air or a private house."
"People most likely moved to sleep in neighbouring districts, but they work, study and probably spend most of their lives in the city."
Lithuania's capital city Vilnius is experiencing outward migration as residents relocate to adjacent districts. Vilnius District attracted over 5,000 new residents in 2024, while Trakai District received more than 750, with fastest growth in areas closest to the city like Riešė, Avižieniai, and Nemėžis. Annual departures from Vilnius have increased from 9,000 people between 2016-2020 to approximately 12,000 annually in recent years. Lower housing costs and remote work flexibility drive this trend. City officials note that relocated residents typically maintain employment and social activities in Vilnius, suggesting the outmigration does not harm the capital's overall growth and vitality.
