Vadim Stroykin, a 59-year-old Russian singer-songwriter, died on February 5, 2023, after reportedly jumping from his St Petersburg apartment when authorities questioned him for donating to the Ukrainian army. Friends, however, doubt he would have committed suicide, citing his passionate opposition to the war in Ukraine. Stroykin, known as a charismatic bard musician and a vocal critic of Russian President Putin, had experienced emotional distress following the invasion of Ukraine. His death has stirred concern over whether it truly was a suicide or the consequences of his outspoken stance against the government.
"Stroykin was remembered by friends as an idealistic eccentric who never concealed his disdain for Russia's war in Ukraine, even as speaking out became perilous."
"He had an acute understanding of right and wrong, and some of those close to him questioned if he would truly take his own life."
