On the Fourth of July, two brothers and one of their sons spotted a whale while boating in Raritan Bay. The whale surfaced and interacted with the boat for about an hour, much to their amazement. This was the first whale sighting for the trio, as they were not originally planning to go out on the water. The experience was described as a great way to celebrate the holiday. The brothers also noted previous whale sightings in the area, confirming Staten Island's reputation for such encounters.
"We were sailing around between the Raritan, outside Great Kills between Sandy Hook and the Verrazzano, just sailing along, when the whale appeared and was playing for about an hour with us."
"We weren't even supposed to go out there, but we figured we had an hour to spare and got lucky. It was a great way to celebrate the Fourth."
"This was a great experience, my son navigating the boat and my brother's first time on the boat, we were all excited."
Staten Island is no stranger to whale sightings. During the summer of 2023, a whale was seen breaching within view of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.
