In a recent podcast, Rakhee Thakrar, known for her role as Shabnam Masood in EastEnders, shared her experiences of facing significant backlash from viewers. She described feeling as though she had failed in her performance due to the audience's strong dislike for her character. This emotional strain led to moments of despair, but also to a sense of liberation when she realized that her role had a profound impact. Alongside co-star Davood Ghadami, she reflected on the importance of portraying difficult storylines, including their emotional journey through a stillbirth.
When I started on EastEnders, and everyone hated Shabnam, like vehemently hated her, I remember feeling like I'd failed. I remember having this one day where I was crying in my bed.
I had created someone that had an effect. But in that moment, I felt like I'd failed. And, actually, what came the next day was utter freedom because I was like, well, I've got nothing to lose.
