For freed Palestinian prisoners, freedom comes with caution DW 01/25/2025
Briefly

After spending seven months in prison, 23-year-old Palestinian student Amal Shujayyeh was released and reunited with her family amid a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Her detention stemmed from charges of inciting violence during her university activism, which she claims adhered to university policies. The ceasefire, intended to halt fighting in Gaza for six weeks, includes the release of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and aims to secure the release of hostages and increase humanitarian aid. Amal described brutal experiences in prison, including degrading searches common for female inmates.
Her release was part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas aimed at pausing the war that has devastated Gaza for 15 months.
Even though this student activism is officially licensed and approved by the university administration, the occupation was opposed to student activism on campus.
