According to NYC DOHMH, for the second to last week of 2024, ending on December 21st, 2024, positive cases of the flu spiked 73% from the previous week. The official Influenza and RSV Surveillance Report accounts for 7,966 Influenza-positive specimens, 83% positive for Influenza A and 10% for Influenza B. Influenza A is more common, affecting both humans and animals, while Influenza B primarily affects humans.
Symptoms of the flu can range from mild to extreme, including cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, chills, fever, diarrhea, chest pain, and severe dizziness. Up to one billion people are infected worldwide each year, according to the WHO, highlighting the flu's commonality, especially during winter months. NYC reported 8% of weekly visits for Influenza-like illness.
NYC DOHMH tracked a 3% decrease of RSV cases from week 50 to week 51, with 4,647 specimens testing positive for the virus. Although both RSV and the flu are respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. It mainly impacts infants and younger children but can affect any age group.
The CDC emphasizes that getting the flu vaccine is the best way to reduce your risk of the flu. Residents can utilize NYC's Vaccine Finder to locate flu shot locations and keep an eye on weekly flu case updates via the New York State Flu Tracker.
