Pets at Home has begun selling cultivated chicken dog treats, making it the first retailer to offer such a product. The snacks, Chick Bites, are produced by Meatly, which has received regulatory approval to use cultivated meat for pet food. These snacks include plant-based ingredients and are billed as slaughter-free, low-carbon options. With initial production capacity being limited, Meatly plans to scale up and expand availability, signifying a significant step towards commercialization of cultivated meat in the pet food industry.
Meatly is claiming a world first for retailing cultivated meat for pet food, as the Guardian reports.
The company gained regulatory clearance for the use-case last summer - claiming a European first.
While this first doggie snack is a "limited release," suggesting its production capacity is still capped, Meatly said its next steps will focus on scaling production.
Chick Bites are its first foray into commercializing Meatly Chicken, its name for the meat it's growing in bioreactors.
