The fire erupted at a major battery storage plant in Moss Landing, causing evacuations and road closures. It raised safety concerns due to the nature of the materials involved.
Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church described the incident as a disaster, acknowledging the high risks associated with lithium battery fires yet expressed some confidence it wouldn’t spread further.
Vistra Energy, the plant’s owner, stated that following the fire’s detection, all personnel were successfully evacuated, emphasizing that their priority remains the safety of the community.
Previous incidents at the Vistra plant in 2021 and 2022 were attributed to sprinkler malfunctions leading to overheating, highlighting ongoing safety challenges at the facility.
