Fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, has escalated in Goma, DRC, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and overwhelming healthcare facilities. Reports of widespread violence, including rapes and looting, have emerged, compounding the humanitarian disaster in the region. A significant number of patients, including children, are suffering from gunshot wounds and other injuries, with hospitals unable to cope with the increase in patients. The UN and Red Cross agencies are highlighting the dire conditions and urgent need for healthcare and protection for civilians amid ongoing conflict.
While the hospital is overwhelmed, we are still receiving calls from desperate injured people who struggle to access healthcare.
We have reports of rapes committed by fighters, looting of property and humanitarian health facilities being hit.
The humanitarian situation in and around Goma remains extremely worrying, said Jens Laerke.
There were reports of health workers being shot at and patients including babies being caught in crossfire.
