Fibre broadband network reaches half of Scotland | Computer Weekly
Briefly

Openreach has significantly expanded its full-fibre broadband network, connecting 1.45 million properties in the UK, with a focus on rural Scotland. Following an investment of over £435 million, the provider highlighted that half of Scottish homes now have access to gigabit broadband. Collaboration with the Scottish government on the R100 programme targets the hardest-to-reach communities, with 30% of the new fibre footprint located in rural areas, enhancing connectivity for businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, and emergency services.
The new fibre network now reaches more than 64,000 Scottish business premises; 1,500 education establishments, 900 hospitals, GP and dental practices; 590 care and nursing homes; 1,400 church and village halls; and 160 emergency and rescue services buildings.
Around 30% of the new fibre footprint is in rural areas, with approximately 100,000 of the hardest-to-reach properties upgraded through collaboration with the Scottish government and other public sector partners.
