Federal Point-in-Time Homeless Count Was Highest on Record in 2024
Briefly

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's yearly census revealed that there were 771,480 people experiencing homelessness as of January 2024, marking an 18 percent increase from 2023.
According to the HUD report, the increase in homelessness is attributed to a worsening national affordable housing crisis, rising inflation, and stagnating wages among middle- and lower-income households.
New York experienced the largest increase in homelessness at 53 percent from 2023 to 2024, driven partly by the influx of new immigrants and asylum seekers.
The HUD report indicates that family homelessness more than doubled in 13 communities impacted by migration, while in 373 other communities the increase was much lower.
