Developer Acorn has plans to construct housing on Blackheath station's car park, which hosts the popular weekly Farmers' Market. While the proposal includes retaining a market square, the Blackheath Society expresses concern about potential loss of the market during construction. They emphasize the market's social importance and call for interim solutions to ensure its continuity. Local residents have additional worries about the development's height and design affecting the village’s character, as well as the need for affordable housing and maintaining some parking for those with limited mobility.
The farmers' market has become an established and important part of Blackheath life both socially and for the wider health of the village, said society spokesman Howard Shields.
In the short-term we have to be sure there's some interim solution to keeping the market going for the long period of construction.
That's the impact on light and also the matter of design, ensuring that it's a pleasant outlook for what is a very characterful part of the village.
The society also wants to ensure that a suitable number of the homes are affordable, and that the way in which the developer will mitigate the impacts of construction are part of any initial planning application.
