"It's evident if you know Perry and watch the movie that it's him. It's amazing how much of our donkey is in Donkey, the way he flips his head when he's mad at Shrek, the way he trots," said Jenny Kiratli, Perry's lead handler.
Although Perry was a beloved member of the community, his life was not without controversy. The animal's medical bills had become a serious expense over the years, costing taxpayers $25,000 per year, which spiked another $15,000 in 2024 due to additional care.
Perry's death was announced on the Barron Park Donkeys Instagram account Friday, which prompted an outpouring of support in dozens of comments in just a few hours, as users recounted their fond memories of interacting with him.
Given the international success of the four "Shrek" films, Perry served as the real-life face behind a global animated superstar, despite receiving only $75 for his modeling role.
