United Federation of Teachers president Michael Mulgrew emphasized that a casino in Times Square would undermine the Theater District, an area pivotal for educational opportunities for students. He stated, 'Broadway is an educational goldmine for the children of our city, and it needs to be protected.' This highlights the importance placed on maintaining a cultural and educational hub for New York’s youth.
Mulgrew pointed out how essential programs like Broadway Bridges provide access for every public school 10th grader to see a performance before graduation. He noted firsthand experiences chaperoning students, many of whom had never seen a live show, showcasing the transformative power of the arts in education.
The UFT is now part of a coalition against the proposed casino, aligning with The Broadway League and other groups who agree that the theater district is not an appropriate location for such an enterprise. Mulgrew argued that the district is already a significant economic engine for the city, illustrating the need to protect its identity.
Mulgrew expressed that while he doesn't oppose the establishment of casinos elsewhere in New York City, placing one in Times Square, especially near the Minskoff Theatre, would detract from the unique atmosphere that Broadway offers. He believes preserving this vital cultural environment is crucial for both educational and economic reasons.
