Excessive levels of harmful radiation found at popular Bay Area park
Briefly

The state-ordered environmental report revealed high levels of harmful radiation at Albany Bulb, identifying 10 locations with elevated gamma count rates linked to hazardous waste disposal.
"Gamma count rate measurements" refers to levels of radioactive waste that emit gamma radiation. Gamma rays are "a radiation hazard for the entire body," according to the EPA.
GSI Environmental recommends the city conduct follow-up tests, including shallow trenching in areas suspected to contain alum mud and surface testing on other elevated areas.
The report indicated results consistent with a landfill environment, but still raised concern due to past chemical waste dumping by Stauffer Chemical Co. in the 1980s.
