Henry McGowan killed his father John at Ballyfin Demesne after John, aged 66, flew to Ireland to help his son. The son traveled widely across Europe and those experiences became an "exhaustless mine" that provided inspiration for his father. As the son grew older his health became fragile and friable, and a period spent in France to recuperate produced no lasting improvement. The son returned to live under his father's care as an adult. The father and son had always been close, and the son's ongoing ill health left him dependent on his father's support.
