In response to a series of earthquakes, residents of Santorini, including Veroniki Balabonidi and her children, evacuated the island, fearing a potential volcanic eruption. By Tuesday, around 6,000 people had left, with many using ferries and flights to reach the Greek mainland. The earthquakes, particularly a notable 5.0 magnitude tremor, led to eerily empty streets in tourist areas. Local businesses suffered from the exodus, as holidaymakers requested refunds and the island experienced an unprecedented quiet period devoid of its usual activity.
Us locals, we're used to earthquakes. It was the volcano—the fear that it could erupt and start spewing very toxic smoke—that was our real worry.
For the first time that anyone could remember, Santorini was in a quiet zone, as local people and most of the foreign workers and tourists left.
