"resistance, threat or violence"
Andrzej Poczobut, 52, is a Polish-Belarusian journalist and correspondent for Gazeta Wyborcza. He was sentenced to eight years in jail in February 2023 for critical reporting that covered mass protests against President Alexander Lukashenko five years earlier. Poczobut refused to leave Belarus during a brutal clampdown on dissent and is serving his sentence in the Novopolotsk penal colony. Numerous protests have called for his release, including demonstrations in Bialystok, Poland. Mzia Amaglobeli, 50, is a Georgian journalist jailed in August for two years on charges of using "resistance, threat or violence." Her sentence is seen as a response to investigations into public spending and abuse of office, and she founded two independent media outlets.
