"The Commission said that the tech giant infringed competition rules by favouring its own online display ad tech services over its competitors, thus abusing its dominant position in the ad tech market. The Commission announced that it has ordered Google to stop such practices and implement measures that would cease any conflict of interest in the supply chain of the ad tech markets."
"Šefčovič said earlier this week that the Commission's internal procedures "existed for a reason". Google said on Friday that it would appeal the Commission's decision. The Commission "imposes an unjustified fine and requires changes that will hurt thousands of European businesses by making it harder for them to make money", said Lee-Anne Mulholland, Google's vice president and global head of regulatory affairs."
"The Commission opened the competition case against Google's ad tech business in June 2021, saying at the time that it was concerned Google might be favouring its own online display advertising technology services over competing providers, advertisers and online publishers in a market thought to be worth around €20 billion in Europe. In preliminary findings in June 2023, the Commission said that Google was forcing customers to use its own ad tech services when purchasing display ads on YouTube"
The European Commission fined Google €2.95 billion for breaching EU competition rules by favouring its own online display ad technology services and abusing a dominant position. The Commission ordered Google to stop the practices and implement measures to remove conflicts of interest in the ad tech supply chain and gave Google 60 days to report how it will resolve the behaviour. Google said it will appeal and called the fine unjustified and harmful to European businesses. The case opened in June 2021, with preliminary findings in June 2023 that Google pushed customers to use its ad tech on YouTube and favoured its ad exchange.
