EU member state representatives in Brussels cleared the way for the Mercosur free trade agreement after a majority of the bloc's 27 states, representing 65% of the population, agreed to proceed. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen could sign the pact with Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay as early as next week, though the agreement still requires European Parliament approval. France has publicly rejected the deal as outdated. Earlier resistance from Italy and Poland delayed a planned December signing in Brazil.
