Hungary said it would take the case to the European Court of Justice."
EU ministers approved a regulation that bans Russian gas imports into the bloc by late 2027. The law stops Russian LNG imports by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas by September 30, 2027, with the deadline extendable to November 1, 2027 if member states cannot meet required gas storage levels. Member states must prepare national plans to diversify gas supplies by March 1 and can suspend the ban for up to four weeks if supply security is seriously threatened. The measure passed via a reinforced majority despite opposition from Hungary and Slovakia; Hungary plans to contest it at the European Court of Justice. Russian gas share in the EU fell from over 40% pre-invasion to about 13% in 2025.
