Authorities have begun to evacuate residents in northeastern Ethiopia after a volcano showed signs of potentially dangerous activity. Civilians from the Afar region were relocated to temporary shelters. Shiferaw Teklemariam, Commissioner of the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, mentioned that while relocation is underway, it’s still early to declare an eruption.
The Ethiopian Geological Institute shared a video indicating dust and smoke rising from the dormant Mount Dofen volcano. Officials have cautioned that not all volcanic activity results in complete eruptions, reinforcing the need for alertness in the region.
The community; some are already leaving those areas. We are also preparing to do it in a well-organized manner. It [moving the community] will be done based on predictions, said Shiferaw Teklemariam, emphasizing the importance of thorough planning in the evacuation process.
A notable aspect of the situation is that the area is prone to seismic activity, with a recent magnitude 5.8 earthquake recorded at a depth of about 10 kilometers. This adds to concerns regarding the potential for volcanic eruptions, as dozens of tremors have been observed in recent months.
